Lebanese Christian strongman Gen. Michel Aoun said an Arab-mediated peace plan endorsed by Lebanese Christian lawmakers should "go to hell" and the pact prompted death threats against the officials.

Aoun's statement Sunday dampened hopes for a quick end to the fighting in Lebanon hours after Lebanese legislators meeting in Taif, Saudi Arabia, endorsed a compromise plan aimed at ending 14 years of civil war.Aoun apparently was not alone in his unhappiness. An anonymous caller claiming to represent the pro-Iranian Islamic Jihad organization said that Lebanese lawmakers in Saudi Arabia would be killed if they ratified the "American charter."

The caller began his statement by reading a verse from the Moslem holy book, the Koran, and then threatened the deputies with death.
