Comment will be accepted through Tuesday, Oct. 31, on a proposal to build a bridge across Salt Creek in the Needles District of Canyonlands National Park.

An environmental assessment has been prepared on the proposal and is available for review or by writing to the Moab office of the National Park Service, 125 W. 200 South, Moab, UT 84532.Harvey Wickware, superintendent of the Southeast Utah Group of Park Service units, said construction could begin this fall on an 80-foot span across the creek if no environmental issues of merit are raised during the public comment period.

Wickware said an existing box culvert the creek flows through is inadequate to handle high water during flash floods.

He said a flood five years ago washed over the top of the road because the culvert was too small to handle the rushing waters. Smaller flows since then have further eroded the road bed, requiring frequent maintenance.
