Pleasant Grove is joining forces with other communities in a nationwide campaign against pornography by promoting Pornography Awareness Week Oct. 29 through Nov. 5.

At a recent City Council meeting, Mayor David Holdaway read a proclamation stating that Pleasant Grove supports the week.Citizens from all over the United States are encouraging their community leaders to promote Pornography Awareness Week, said Carolyn Allred, a Pleasant Grove citizen who is involved with Utah Citizens for Decency.

Allred said she was concerned about the effects of pornography and began to participate in local organizations dealing with the subject. Last week she approached Holdaway and asked him if Pleasant Grove would support the proclamation.

Five national organizations are promoting the week nationally. These groups include the National Christian Association, Morality in Media, Children's Legal Foundation, the National Coalition Against Pornography and American Family Association.

The theme for 1989's Pornography Awareness Week is "Victims of the Victimless Crime," in recognition of adults and children who have become victims of sexual crimes committed by those addicted to pornography.

Maureen Brimhall, director of Utah Citizens for Decency, said members of her organization hope other communities in the state will support the week.

"We want to keep Utah a decent place to live in. We like to maintain high standards," Brimhall said. "The purpose of our organization is to inform citizens of the effects of pornography, and the best way to solve the problem is to get people involved."

Citizens who are interested in getting their own communities involved in Pornography Awareness Week can contact Utah Citizens for Decency leaders.
