The 1990 battle against gypsy moths may involve spraying at least 65,000 acres in Salt Lake, Davis and Utah counties.

Nearly 30 members of the Utah Gypsy Moth Coordinating Committee met last week to plan a campaign against the moths and identified three main areas of infestation, said Van Burgess of the Utah Department of Agriculture. Those areas were eastern Salt Lake County, particularly on Forest Service land east of the Mount Olympus Cove area, southeastern Davis County in Bountiful and around the mouth of Provo Canyon, Burgess said.

Aerial spraying in Salt Lake County and ground spraying by Provo and Bountiful cities over about 1,300 acres were effective in killing moth larvae last spring.

But the 1990 campaign will be aimed at eradicating the pests across Utah. Officials estimate it will take four to five years to completely wipe out the insects.
