Brigham Young quarterback Ty Detmer and Colorado State end Eric Schaller on Monday were named the Western Athletic Conference players of the week.

Detmer, offensive player of the week, completed 22 of 28 passes for 426 yards and three touchdowns as the Cougars defeated Texas-El Paso 49-24 Saturday. The sophomore quarterback rushed nine yards for another touchdown, and set a school record for most passing yards by a sophomore in a season with 2,644 yards. Marc Wilson set the previous record of 2,418.Schaller, collecting defensive honors, had 15 tackles, including nine unassisted, recovered a school record three fumbles and had one quarterback sack as the Rams defeated Hawaii 31-16 Saturday.

Others nominated for offensive honors were: Mike Angelsey of Utah, wide receiver Terance Mathis of New Mexico, center Rob Sesich of UTEP and running back Tony Alford of Colorado State.

Defensive player nominees were: UTEP linebacker Pete Shufelt, New Mexico linebacker Nate Morris, Brigham Young linebacker Bob Davis and Utah linebacker Garland Harris.
