A 17-year-old Price youth was killed Monday night while hunting deer in the mountains east of Price when unstable earth gave way under his feet, causing him to fall about 50 feet, Carbon County sheriff's officials said Tuesday.

The victim, identified as Brad Matheson, was the fourth deer hunter to die since the hunt began Saturday.Matheson, hunting with four companions, was "looking over about a 50-foot drop. The earth gave way and he dropped down about 50 feet and was killed," said sheriff's spokesman Bob Craig.

Brent Hatch, who was standing next to Matheson, jumped back to solid ground when the earth collapsed and escaped injury, Craig said.

In fatal accidents during the hunt's opening weekend, one man was killed when his horse rolled on top of him and two others died of heart attacks.
