Sarah Hart and her mother, Dawn, mourn the smashing of four painted pumpkins _ four of five painted squash that the family so valued that they carried them inside each night. But tragedy struck Monday night, when unknown vandals destroyed all but one of the pumpkins. One smashed pumpkin was especially mourned, as it was the first home-grown by the family and was destined someday to fill a pie crust. "It was really upsetting," Mrs. Hart said. "All the kids cried because they worked so hard on the pumpkins. They were just devastated." But the family, in its sorrow, hoped to head off other potential pumpkin-bashing pranks with a sign posted early Tuesday, aimed at the destroyers and others of their ilk.
