Native Plants Inc. and Beckman Instruments Inc. have entered into an agreement to jointly develop automated instrumentation for quicker and less expensive genetic analysis.

Under the agreement, scientists and engineers from both companies will develop the system. Beckman will manufacture and market the instrumentation as well as be distributor of certain NPI probes, genetic information and software.NPI, headquartered at the University of Utah's Research Park, is a privately held company that develops and markets products for improved crop protection, plant output and breeding.

Beckman, based in Fullerton, Calif., is a publicly traded corporation specializing in developing laboratory analytical systems.
