Gov. Norm Bangerter, responding to recent environmentalist charges that the Olympics would bring environmental ruin, said the state "will control our destiny" and keep the Olympics out of Big and Little Cottonwood canyons.

The Wasatch Mountain Club warned Monday that the International Olympic Committee, owners of the Olympics, could force Olympic venues into the environmentally sensitive canyons east of Salt Lake City.Bangerter told reporters Wednesday, however, "We have no intention of putting those venues into those canyons."

"We will control our destiny. We will control those Games. We see no effort on anyone's part to infringe on the decisions made by the organizing committee . . . as to where those Games will be held to secure the environmental safety of those critical areas."
