A 17-year-old high school senior will preside as queen of the 101st Tournament of Roses on New Year's Day in Pasadena, Calif.

"My reaction was very surprised, and I'm very excited," Yasmine Begum Delawari said Tuesday after she was named by Don W. Fedde, president of the Tournament of Roses Association.

Delawari, a Pasadena area resident, was chosen from seven finalists who constitute the tournament's royal court.
