The 1A-2A races were without graduated multi-year winners Jimmy Nelson of Piute and Tara Laws of San Juan, although the latter took the day off from BYU to return to her old stomping grounds.
Funny thing is that Laws' old stomping grounds could become the new stomping grounds of her former San Juan teammate, Nicolette Mose, who has since been breaking some of Laws' course records en route to an undefeated season. After finishing fourth as a freshman last year, the sophomore Mose led from start to finish to easily claim her first 1A-2A individual title with a time fo 19:23.87.
Talker and teammates Avalene Yellowman (eighth), Ruth Barlow (ninth) and Mary Rice (12th) all finished in the top dozen to give the Whitehorse girls their second straight team title.
In the 1A-2A boys race, Monticello's Micah Ewart won individual honors with a time of 16:01.4.
Ewart held off a late-race kick by Park City's Mike James, who took second with a time of 16:08.5. Park City went on to win the boys' team title _ its first-ever cross country crown _ with 64 points, edging Richfield (78) and Monticello (84).
