Pacific Gas & Electric Co. declared an "unusual event" at its Diablo Canyon nuclear power plant Friday and shut down reactor Unit 2.

No radioactive material was involved in the incident, and there was no danger to the public or employees, PG&E spokesman Dick Davin said. There were no injuries.Sparks were seen coming from the vicinity of the reactor's electrical generator "on the turbine deck" at 6:55 a.m., Davin said.
