Provo police on Friday captured a convicted rapist who escaped earlier in the week from the Utah State Hospital.

Jack Jessop, 45, was arrested around 4:40 p.m. by Lt. Mike Mock and Officer Ron Hughes after the two policemen spotted Jes-sop inside a fast-food outlet at 48 S. 500 W., Provo - about a half a block from the Provo Police Station.Mock and Hughes had entered the restaurant to make a purchase and saw Jessop at the counter waiting for food.

"He seemed very nervous," Mock said. "I walked over to the left side of him to get a better look at his face, but he turned his head in the other direction."

After Hughes was able to take a good look at Jessop, the officers asked him for identification, which he was unable to produce. The officers asked him to remove a stocking cap he was wearing and to step outside. Mock called to the station and asked that a photograph of Jessop be brought to the scene to verify his identity.

Mock said Jessop indicated in an interview at the station following his arrest that he had been in Provo since his escape from the hospital last Tuesday.
