The Domestic Violence Intervention Task Force was created in the 1989 session of the Legislature to study the issue and make recommendations about policy to address domestic violence. It is now seeking public comment on its recommendations.
The proposals are included in three bills and one resolution that will be presented to lawmakers in January. One requires a peace officer, with probable cause to think a crime has been committed, to arrest the person suspected of domestic violence or issue a citation. The legislation would also provide funding to municipalities and counties for enforcement and prosecution, as well as for treatment of both victims and perpetrators. Alleged perpetrators would also be required to vacate a victim's premises for 24 hours after a domestic violence incident.Copies of the legislation can be obtained by calling the Office of Legislative Research and General Counsel at 538-1032 or by writing to 436 State Capitol, Salt Lake City, UT 84114.
