The first day of action in the 1A Girls State Volleyball Tournament had its share of everything, including upsets, three-set marathons and come-from-behind victories.

So far, the class of the competition seems to be, coincidentally enough, last year's creme de la creme. Defending champ Rich had little trouble defeating Tabiona (15-4, 15-3 in first-round action), last year's consolation champs Valley beat Monument Valley easily, 15-1, 15-3, and Enterprise breezed into the quarterfinals (on the basis of their 15-2, 15-8 win over Salt Lake Lutheran and 15-1, 15-0 win over Panguitch). In Friday's late games, Rich beat Valley, Manila beat Parowan, and Monticello beat North Summit.

The Cinderella team of the tournament could be Wendover. The Wildcats' motto seems to be "When in Rome, act as you would at home," as they treated their loyal fans to two three-set thrillers to reach quarterfinal action.

In their first endurance match, the Wendover girls lost the first game to Piute 15-11 and were down 4-0 in the second game before scoring 15 unanswered points. The third game was a nail-biter, as they eventually triumphed 15-12.

In their second marathon duel, the Wildcats took the opener to Intermountain Christian (an upset winner over Region 13 champs Green River) 15-9, but then lost the second game by the reverse score. They surged out to a 13-3 lead in the deciding game, but allowed Intermountain's girls 10 straight points to knot the game and the match. Wendover's fans then just about shook down the UVCC Activity Center stands, exhorting their girls to a hard-fought 15-13 win.

Wendover is scheduled to meet Rich this afternoon.

Another pair of upset victims were Region 11 runners-up North Summit and Region 13 runners-up Monticello, who faced each other to stave off elimination from the consolation bracket. North Summit lost to Parowan 15-2, 12-15, 15-12, while Monticello lost to Manila 8-15, 15-9, 15-12.

Eliminated from the tournament were Tabiona and Piute. Today's semifinal action starts at 11:30 a.m., and the championship game will be played at 6 p.m. In consolation action, Green River will face Monument Valley, while Salt Lake Lutheran will face the winners of the North Summit-Monticello matchup at 10 a.m.
