A former USS Iowa gunnery officer who permitted sailors to conduct unauthorized experiments with the battleship's 16-inch guns has been given a letter of reprimand, Navy officials announced.

The punishment was imposed Friday on Lt. Cmdr. Kenneth M. Costigan Sr. at an administrative hearing stemming from the explosion in a gun turret on the battleship that killed 47 sailors April 19.Costigan, who was relieved of command of the Iowa's big guns earlier this year, also received a suspended fine of $1,500, which will be negated in six months if he does not violate good-behavior rules, the Navy said.
