Winter's off to a good start - at least the skiers and other snow lovers hope so.
And with the temperature reaching a high of only 38 degrees Saturday afternoon at the Salt Lake International Airport, the snow is more apt to stay around. The low was 31 degrees early Saturday at the airport, said National Weather Service mete-orologist William J. Alder."Awesome" was the way Alder described the amount of snow from the second storm of the season, which began Friday evening and continued into Saturday. Alta received 24 inches; Snowbird, 23 inches; Solitude, 16; and Snowbasin and Powder Mountain, both 14 inches.
And another 2 to 4 inches of new snow is expected in many areas of northern Utah, mainly in the mountains, Saturday night and Sunday.
Snowfall, ranging from about a half-inch to three inches, was common in many Salt Lake Valley locations, although 4 inches were measured on the upper Avenues. Salt Lake County northward to about Ogden received 1 to 3 inches, while Utah County received only about a half-inch to an inch.
Prospector Square in Park City recorded about 6 inches and Coalville, 5 inches.
Water amounts from Friday's storm: Salt Lake Airport, .60 of an inch; Holladay, .74; Hill Air Force Base, .89; Bountiful, .84; Sandy, .80; Springville, .33; Brigham Young University, .17.
Alder said the weather will continue cold into the early part of next week, but temperatures will moderate some. Highs on Sunday will be in the mid-40s and Monday in the upper 40s along the Wasatch Front. Overnight lows Sunday and Monday night will be in the mid- to upper-20s. It should be dry but cold on Halloween, Alder said.
