The Utah Council of Teachers of English wants to put Utah writers on the map, literally.

The council is creating a state literary map and guide to document the writing of Utahns during the past 200 years. Joyce Kinkead, associate professor of English and director of writing at USU, will direct the yearlong project."We think this is a terrific way for Utahns to learn about one of Utah's greatest cultural resources - its writers," Kinkead said. "Beginning with the literature of exploration and travel and extending to contemporary fiction, poetry and drama, Utah has a history of nearly 200 years of writing."

Kinkead said the public is invited to contribute names of authors for consideration in the book.

The "Literary Guide to Utah" will be organized by town, listing authors associated with each community. Each author entry includes complete bibliographic information (titles of books, publisher, dates) as well as a one-to-two sentence description of each book.

She said people interested in contributing to the guide must contact her by Dec. 1. Entries are due by April 1, 1990. Kinkead can be contacted by mail at the department of English, USU, Logan, UT 84322-3200, or telephone 750-2725.

Entries must be authors published in reputable publishing houses. Other criteria are available from Kinkead.

The guide will be unveiled next fall at the regional meetings of the Teachers of English/Language Arts in Park City.
