A judge will explain the procedures of the juvenile court system to educators at an upcoming seminar.
The Deseret News Subject Seminar on Saturday, Nov. 4, will focus on the differences between adult and juvenile courts. Juvenile Court Judge David W. Sorenson, who formerly served as a circuit court judge, will address the subject. As part of the seminar, Sorenson will conduct a mock hearing based on an actual juvenile case, with the assistance of Juvenile Court Region Chief Deloy Archibald, and Court Executive Micheal B. Strebel.
Sorenson said that because most families in the state will have contact with a court at some time in their lives, it is important for everyone to have a better understanding of laws and court procedures.
Another speaker, Dennis A. Martinez, a probation officer and intake supervisor, will talk about teens in the probation system and provide teachers with a tour of the Juvenile Detention Center in Roy.
Educators can register for the seminar by calling 237-2140, or mailing a check to P.O. Box 1257, Salt Lake City, UT 84110. The $15 registration fee includes lunch and bus transportation to and from the detention center. Teachers will also receive state and district credit and a notebook of materials from the Utah State Court Administrator's Office. Deadline for registration is Thursday, Nov. 2.
The Juvenile Court Seminar is a repeat of a seminar offered in Salt Lake City last year and is part of a series of Subject Seminars for educators sponsored by the education department of the Deseret News.
