The Hellenic Cultural Center looked more like an overcrowded department store Saturday night, as Judge Memorial supporters gathered to show support at the school's annual auction.
The ninth annual benefit for Judge Memorial, which helps to raise money for the school's operating costs, was appropriately named Viva Judge Fiesta and proved to be nothing short of a celebration.People had the opportunity to participate in both a silent and an oral auction, and the items up for bid included balloon flights, cruises, trips, theater tickets, art, club memberships, mountain bikes, a Christmas tree and even an autographed poster of Karl Malone - a little something for everyone.
University of Utah basketball coach Rick Majeris acted as celebrity auctioneer.
Kathleen Grisley, chairwoman of the event, said almost everything - from food and drink, to items up for auction, and even Chef Trujillos' preparation of the Mexican buffet - was donated.
Many parents also pitched in a helping hand.
"I have a child that goes to Judge, and when you do, you donate time and money, whether you want to or not," said Betsy Hunt, a member of the benefit committee. She added, however, that the benefit was always a great time.
Sonny Tangero, head of development, said the event is the main fund-raiser for the school and helps to raise money to subsidize the students' tuition.
He said last year more than $60,000 was raised. He hopes this year will bring in more.
"We do this to keep the costs down," he said.
Tangero said the students' tuition only pays for about 90 percent of the school's expenses. He said the development office is responsible for raising the other 10 percent.
