The Deseret News received review copies of several books this week. Among them:
THE LION IN THE BOX; By Marguerite de Angeli; Doubleday; 66 pages; $12.95.
THEE, HANNAH; By Marguerite de Angeli; Doubleday; 98 pages; $15.95.
YONIE WONDERNOSE; Marguerite de Angeli; Doubleday; $15.95.
Many - if not all - publishing houses are looking for good, short, easy-to-read children's books to publish these days. But where many houses are tossing off quick and easy volumes, Doubleday takes the high road here with three handsome and tasteful editions of classics by Newbery legend Marguerite de Angeli.
"The Lion in the Box" is a Christmas story with an ending that shines like a star atop a tree. It is a big-print book with a simple, direct vocabulary; a family story warmer than the Waltons.
"Thee, Hannah" is about a Quaker girl just before the Civil War. It is the story of a young girl coming to grips with the austerity of her religious heritage.
"Yonie Wondernose" gets in trouble by following his nose.
