Hollywood's movie studios are playing "chicken" over Christmas season theater screens, for there may not be enough screens to go around.
Some 23 major films are slated for release during the holiday period between mid-November and late December. Last year's holiday film glut included just 18 titles. No studio wants to admit defeat by delaying release dates, but some probably will have to do just that.
Tri-Star's holiday releases include "Steel Magnolias" and "Music Box." Others on tap are Universal's "Back to the Future II" and "Born on the Fourth of July," Paramount's "Harlem Nights" and "Two Jakes," Warner Bros.' "Tango & Cash" and "Driving Miss Daisy," Orion's "She Devil" and MGM/UA's "Stanley & Iris."
