Prime Minister Toshiki Kaifu was elected Tuesday to a new two-year term as president of the ruling Liberal Democratic Party and vowed to launch diplomacy to contribute to world peace and prosperity.

Kaifu, 58, won the re-election uncontested at the party's extraordinary convention in Tokyo. No balloting took place as he was the only candidate in the race."I will promote diplomacy to contribute to world peace and prosperity and implement policies aimed at building a fair and affuent society," Kaifu told the session.

He reiterated that his administration will oppose liberalization on the importation of rice, which he called "Japan's staple product and foundation of Japanese culture."
