A U.S. Air Force tanker jet with four people aboard crashed and burned in the woods early Wednesday, killing at least three crewmen, authorities said. Witnesses said the plane exploded in the air.

The KC-135 was returning to Loring Air Force Base in Limestone, Maine, from a training mission when it went down around 6 a.m. and set woods on fire near Perth-Andover, a community of about 1,900 across the Maine border, authorities said.
