A Salt Lake man has been sentenced to nine months in the Iron County Jail and three years probation after pleading guilty to attempting to extort money from his former girlfriend in Cedar City.

Adam Troy Hepworth, 27, was sentenced Monday by 5th District Judge J. Philip Eves.He was arrested Sept. 27, 1988, after he threatened to make public photographs depicting himself and a 17-year-old girl engaged in various sexual activities, said Iron County Attorney Scott Burns.

In exchange for Hepworth's guilty plea to third-degree felony extortion, charges of forcible sexual abuse, sexual exploitation of a minor and attempted forcible sodomy were dismissed.

Hepworth was arrested after the girl, wearing a concealed listening device, exchanged $500 in marked bills for some of the photographs outside his Cedar City residence.

Burns said police also taped phone calls between Hepworth and the girl in which he asked her to deliver the money and threatened to distribute the photos if she did not comply.

Eves' clerk said the case will be reviewed in court on Dec. 19.
