Sunday Silence beat Easy Goer for the third time, winning the $3 million Breeders' Cup Classic and clinching Horse of the Year honors in the Florida dusk Saturday at Gulfstream Park.

Chris McCarron, substituting for the suspended Pat Valenzuela, sent Sunday Silence into the lead past Blushing John in the upper stretch, and the Kentucky Derby and Preakness winner just barely held off a furious closing charge by Easy Goer to win by a neck.Easy Goer had gone off the odds-on favorite with a crowd of 51,342, but for the third time in four meetings this year could not get the best of the Charlie Whittingham-trained colt. Easy Goer's only victory over Sunday Silence was in the Belmont Stakes.

Sunday Silence carried 122 pounds over the 1 1/4 miles on a fast track in 2:00 1-5 for his seventh victory in nine starts this year. It was worth $1,350,000, giving him earnings of $4,578,454, which is a record for a 3-year-old.
