Media mogul Rupert Murdoch, whose four-channel satellite Sky Television is trying to bust the near-monopoly of the BBC and ITV on the British tube, has blasted his two competitors.

"British television has been an integral part of the British disease," Murdoch told an Edinburgh audience. "Strangulated English accents dominate dramas that are played out in rigid class-structured settings. Much of what passes for quality in British television really is no more than the reflection of the values of a narrow elite."
