Senators Jake Garn and Orrin Hatch will serve as honorary co-chairmen of the national fund-raising effort for Salt Lake City's international bid to host the 1998 Winter Olympic Games.

Garn's office announced that the state's leading Republicans will stress the importance of national support for the city's bid. Such support is vital, they are quoted as saying.Tom Welch, chairman of the Salt Lake Winter Games Committee, said the pair sends an important message to everyone involved in the effort, including the International Olympic Committee that will decide who hosts the Games.

"Having two of our country's most respected senators at the helm of our national fund-raising efforts sends a signal to the leaders of corporate America and the members of the IOC, that we have support at the highest levels of government for our bid effort."

The committee hopes to raise $1.5 million by 1991.
