Typhoon Angela roared through the northern Philippines, killing at least 26 people and leaving more than 40 missing, relief officials said Saturday.

Angela slammed into the rice and tobacco producing northern section of the main island of Luzon Friday with peak winds of 109 mph before moving out into the South China Sea.Teresa Padua, spokeswoman of the Department of Social Welfare, said 26 people drowned in floods that swept their homes in the coastal town of Gonzaga, Cagayan province, 270 miles north of Manila. She said more than 40 other people were reported missing.

Andres Ravelo, deputy regional director of the department said by telephone from the Cagayans provincial capital of Tuguegarao, the tpyhoon uprooted trees and electric power posts, crushed hundreds of houses and ruined rice fields.
