Republican superstars Lee Atwater, Newt Gingrich and Steven M. Studdert are scheduled to address the party's faithful Thursday through Saturday, Oct. 12-14, at the Western States Republican Leadership Conference in Salt Lake City.

Utah Republican Party Chairman Richard Snelgrove said as many as 400 party leaders from throughout the West, Guam and American Samoa will gather for the event, which is billed as a working conference for the 1990 elections."This is the first time Salt Lake City has ever hosted this, and we're excited about it," said Snelgrove. "From our standpoint, the purpose of the conference is to build enthusiasm and excitement for next year's election campaigns."

To be held in the Red Lion, the conference will feature candidate-training seminars, polling panels, workshops and insider perspectives from some of the nation's leading Republican strategists.

James Wray, director of the White House Office of Political Affairs, will give participants a "Political Overview from the White House" during the Saturday, Oct. 14, morning session. He will be followed by Studdert, former assistant to the president for special projects, whose topic is "The Bush Administration: Building a Better America." The morning keynote address will be given by Gingrich, House Republican whip.

Atwater, the party's national committee chairman, will speak at Saturday's luncheon.
