The AAA diamond ratings, which have applied to accommodations and resorts, will now be applied to restaurants, AAA officials announced at a recent news conference. The organization's travel guides are now treading into territory once owned by the powerful Michelin "star."

The auto club, which has headquarters in Falls Church, Va., began testing its restaurant rating system in several Northeast states in 1985, and, after receiving the thumbs-up from members, phased in the program in other areas.Eleven of this year's regional TourBooks, which are available to members only, include about 3,000 restaurant ratings; in 1990, 24 TourBooks will include more than 6,700 ratings.
