It might have been the sixth charge of driving under the influence for Kenneth Worles Thompson, but it was his first on a lawn mower.
Driving his 10-horsepower Toro over the weekend, Thompson ran a red light at a major intersection, sheriff's reports said. A deputy sheriff witnessed the incident and said two vehicles almost struck Thompson.Thompson told the deputy that he takes his lawnmower everywhere since he cannot drive a car due to past arrests for driving under the influence.
Thompson, a Naples resident, admitted to the officer that he had been drinking, reports state. He also was charged with driving on a habitually revoked license.
The officer smelled alcohol on Thompson and noticed bloodshot and glassy eyes.
Nevertheless, Thompson escaped a field sobriety test because he claimed a physical disability. Thompson later refused to take a breathalyzer test. He was booked and later released on his own recognizance.
