You really can tell a book by its cover when it comes to a person's appearance, according to a survey conducted for Avon Products Inc.

Some 64 percent in the survey - 500 women selected at random - said they can size up a person by the way he or she looks. And while 83 percent said society places too much emphasis on attractiveness, which includes personality as well as appearance, 95 percent said it's important to them personally either to boost their self-confidence, please a spouse or boyfriend or to advance their careers.

While most women believe they can favorably influence the way they look, more than half of those surveyed said they spend less than 30 minutes each day on grooming, including skin care, makeup and hair and nail care. Products used most on a daily basis are soap, 83 percent; moisturizers, 51 percent, and lipstick or lip gloss, 49 percent.

The survey was conducted by New World Decisions, a research firm in Princeton, N.J., in consultation with researchers at the University of Pennsylvania's Center for Human Appearance.
