SHARE SHOPKO PLANS NEW STORES IN OREM, BRIGHAM CITY FOR A TOTAL OF 11 UTAH OUTLETS

Construction will begin soon on a 101,000 square-foot ShopKo store on 9.5 acres at Center and State streets in Orem.

In addition, Gene Bankers, ShopKo vice president, said the firm, based in Green Bay, Wis., has announced a new store will be built in Brigham City, bringing to 11 the number of stores the discount retailerwill have in Utah.The announcements come on the heels of new stores recently opening in West Valley City and Logan.

ShopKo and Smith's Food King will co-anchor the Orem shopping center being developed by The Boyer Co. of Salt Lake City. The new store will be completed in one year, and local contractors will be invited to bid on the project.

When the store opens, 200 jobs will be available, bringing the total number of ShopKo employees in Utah to 2,550.

ShopKo stores have a variety of departments including toys, housewares, sporting goods, records, health and beauty aids, automotive, clothes and fashion accessories.

Bankers said ShopKo features a no-hassle return policy and free layaway, which he said is contributing to the national chain's growth.

A year ago, ShopKo stores opened in Murray, Sandy, West Jordan, Taylorsville, Provo, Ogden and Layton.
