The Senate has condemned Nicaraguan President Daniel Ortega's announcement that he will cancel the 19-month cease-fire in the war with the Contras.

A strongly worded resolution, approved 95-0 Tuesday, demands Ortega renew his commitment to the cease-fire and conduct elections scheduled for Feb. 25 in a free, fair and open manner. It expresses concern that Ortega's cancellation of the cease-fire "could be a prelude to a Sandinista effort to cancel or postpone the elections."

"Even Ortega's strongest apologists in Congress are having a hard time coming up with excuses for this one," said Senate Republican leader Bob Dole of Kansas.
