Cold temperatures seemed to keep many of this year's Halloween pranksters indoors.
But those that braved the freezing temperatures managed to keep law enforcement officers throughout the valley busy much of the night with minor vandalism and theft calls. Probably the most brazen tale of terror, however, is being recounted by an unsuspecting Holladay couple.During peak trick-or-treat time, about 7:30 p.m., two men dressed in Halloween costumes forced their way into a home near 1700 East and 5400 South and robbed the family.
"(The couple) opened the door, thinking they were trick-or-treaters and the two individuals forced their way inside," said Salt Lake County Sheriff's Lt. Glen Bailess.
The two robbers - one brandishing a small handgun - demanded jewelry and bound the husband and wife with tape. After searching the house, the duo then fled with an undetermined amount of jewelry.
"That got a little spooky for a minute," Bailess said. "Fortunately, the victims were not hurt."
Elsewhere, smashing pumpkins and blowing up mailboxes were popular activities for several juveniles. Others combined the two sports and threw the pumpkins at the mailboxes.
"We've also had four or five cases of big juveniles stealing little juveniles' candy," a West Jordan dispatcher said. And a Salt Lake City dispatcher sent an officer to investigate a report of a man whose Halloween costume was missing a few pieces.
The "flasher" was wearing nothing but a "trench coat and a smile," she said.
