A Morgan rancher has been chosen as one of 10 finalists in a national conservation awards program, a spokeswoman for Gov. Norm Bangerter said.
Frank W. Bohman, owner of a 4,155-acre ranch, was selected from 50 state winners in the 1989 Soil and Water Conservation Awards Program. Three national winners will be chosen from the 10 finalists for $1,000 awards and certificates in December."I believe that each of us has an obligation to treat our land with respect and to try and leave it a little better than we found it," Bohman said.
The Morgan County rancher's methods include reseeding, rotation, controlled burning, water developments, cross fencing for livestock rotation grazing and planting for wildlife and recreation.
Bohman said his 200 cows now graze three months longer than his livestock did in 1950, and his calves are about 100 pounds heavier than 30 years ago.
His conservation work has resulted in enough water to supply his home, a large lawn, a garden and a storage tank Bohman uses to raise fish to stock his and his neighbors' ponds.
The rancher also irrigates 155 acres of cropland and meadow.
