Bette Midler figures she struck a blow for artistic rights in winning $400,000 from the Young & Rubicam advertising agency. Midler was seeking $10 million because a 1985 Ford commercial used an imitation of her hit "Do You Wanna Dance" as sung by one of her backup singers, Ula Hedwig. "I hope my victory will in a small way contribute to higher ethical standards in the advertising field," Midler said Monday after the verdict was issued. "I also hope it will cause companies to pause before they knowingly and willfully trod on the property rights of others."
