Duchesne County deputies have called off the search for a shallow grave a California deer hunter said he found last week.

Chief Deputy Sheriff Doug Horrocks said that three days of searching in the rugged Dry Gulch area about 20 miles north of Altamont had failed to turn up the site."We gave it up," he said late Wednesday. "We've had the dogs up there and gone over the same area a dozen times and found nothing."

He said the hunter, who lives in Pasadena, Calif., and whose name was not released, called the sheriff's office Monday and said he stumbled across the grave "sometime last week."

He didn't call earlier because he apparently didn't want to get involved, Horrocks said. The man said he did not dig up the mound but was sure it was a grave.
