A Price man who had a close call in a freak accident that claimed the life of a friend last week has been killed in a car crash, Carbon County Sheriff's officials said Thursday.
Brent Hatch, 18, a passenger in the vehicle, was killed when he was partially ejected from the car during the rollover at 3:45 p.m. on U.S. 6.Utah Highway Patrol troopers said the driver of the vehicle, David Gunderson, 16, Price, apparently fell asleep and drifted off of the roadway. He then overcorrected, crossed the road, hit a guard rail and rolled, police said.
Gunderson and passenger Tory Richardson, 16, also of Price, were taken to Castleview Hospital. Both were in stable condition Wednesday night with broken bones and abrasions, a nursing supervisor said.
Hatch narrowly escaped injury in an Oct. 23 accident while hunting in the mountains east of Price. Brad Matheson, 17, was killed when the earth gave way under him and he fell from a 50-foot cliff, said sheriff's spokesman Bob Craig.
Hatch was standing next to Matheson, but "moved aside or jumped when the ground started caving," Craig said.
When he learned of the fatal car accident eight days later, "I just remembered the name and checked it out and it was the same kid," Craig said.
The sheriff's spokesman said acquaintances of the men said Matheson told Hatch he "had a dream the week before that they were going to die together," Craig said. "It's kind of spooky."
