The Navy has awarded a contract worth up to $15 million to the Eyring Research Institute's Simulation Systems Division, based in Midvale, to build helicopter simulators.

"This is a milestone for Eyring. It marks the acceptance of Eyring as a major producer of quality systems simulation products for the Department of Defense," said Rep. Howard Nielson, R-Utah, who announced the contract Wednesday. The trainers will simulate the performance of the new SH-2G LAMPS MK1 helicopter used in anti-submarine warfare, mine hunting, ship tracking and search-and-rescue operations. The first phase of the contract calls for Eyring to build one simulator, with construction of up to five possible.

A press release from Nielson's office quoted Eyring project coordinator Matt Compton saying the company will begin immediately to look for about 20 engineers to work on the project as well as other contracts that are pending.
