Provo's Community Thrift and Relief Store needs volunteers to help with donations during the upcoming holiday season.
According to coordinator Roger Martin, volunteers are needed to help with general retail responsibilities, including sort-ing and cleaning donated clothing and placing the items on the racks.Community Thrift and Relief takes donations from the community which are provided at low cost or free to low-income people.
Volunteers can help at the store on a one-time or a regular basis. The store is open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., and volunteers are needed all day.
Groups of volunteers can also help organize clothing drives.
People interested in volunteering at the thrift store may call the United Way Volunteer Center.
Other community volunteer opportunities include:
-Deseret Village, a group home for mentally retarded adults in Spanish Fork, needs volunteers to help with their floor exercise program from 4 to 6 p.m. A volunteer is also needed to teach sign language to a mentally disabled woman living at Deseret Village.
-Volunteers are needed to teach homebound senior citizens about home energy conservation and lowering utility bills. Volunteers receive training from the Housing Authority and are asked to make two home visits each week.
-Groups of volunteers are needed to help with miscellaneous proj-ects at various Utah County nursing homes. Activities include writing letters, reading to patients, helping with arts and crafts projects and decorating for the holidays.
