A Missouri prison inmate was given another 15-year prison term this week in 2nd District Court in the 1987 kidnapping, rape, and robbery of a Kaysville woman.
Timothy D. Hughes, 31, pleaded guilty to aggravated robbery in the June 29, 1987, abduction of a young woman from a Layton shopping mall. The woman was forced into her car, raped and then put out of the car at a rest stop near Tremonton in Box Elder County. Hughes, who threatened the woman with a screwdriver, admitted taking $22 from her before he fled in her car.Hughes was charged with five first-degree felonies in the incident, including aggravated kidnapping, aggravated robbery, and three counts of aggravated sexual assault.
According to court records, Hughes is serving a 15-year prison term in Missouri for a similar incident there. It was his confession to Missouri police officials that led to the Utah case being cleared up, defense attorney Glen Cella said Tuesday during Hughes' sentencing by Judge Douglas L Cornaby.
In a plea bargain, Hughes pleaded guilty to the aggravated robbery charge and the remaining felony counts were dismissed.
Reviewing Hughes' record, Cornaby noted a string of similar attacks and vehicle thefts across the county, including Wyoming, Florida and the Midwest.
Cornaby ordered Hughes to begin serving a 15-year minimum mandatory prison term that will run concurrently with his prison time in Missouri. If he is paroled from Missouri before his Utah term ends, he will be brought here to finish his prison time, Cornaby ordered.
