Four Utahns were honored by the Utah Hospital Association at its annual convention this week for their outstanding contributions to the health-care community.

-Dr. Kim Bateman, a family practitioner from Ephraim, received the Distinguished Service to Health-care Award, presented by the Utah Society of Hospital Marketing and Public Relations. Bateman has envisioned and worked toward the creation of a rural health-care system that has become a model for hospitals around the country.-Bob A. Martin, a certified rehabilitation nurse from Clinton, was awarded the Hospital Nurse of the Year honor by both the hospital association and the Utah Nurses Association.

Martin was heralded as an accomplished instructor of two important classes - one dealing with strokes, the other for patients suffering from spinal cord injury.

-Jim Cornwell, former publisher of the Greensheet Newspapers and board chairman of Cottonwood Hospital, received the Trustee of the Year Award. As a newspaper publisher for more than 30 years, Cornwell began lobbying for a hospital in the southern part of the valley in 1955. He pressed through persistent editorials until Cottonwood Hospital Medical Center was built in 1969.

-Lena Losser, a volunteer at Mountain View Hospital, Payson, was the recipient of the Volunteer of the Year Award. In the past 20 years, the great-grandmother has volunteered some 5,000 hours of service.

The association this week also elected H. Gary Pehrson, vice president, professional services for Intermountain Health Care, Inc., as chairman of the association board of trustees.

Serving with him in 1990 will be Don Larsen, past president, Castleview Hospital, Price; W. Gary Farnes, chairman-elect, LDS Hospital; Max Lauderdale, treasurer, St. Mark's Hospital, and Kenneth H. Rock, UHA president.
