Post-Halloween pumpkin residue, toilet-papered trees and egg-stained windows in Lowell, Mich., didn't haunt people who took out their "spook insurance."

About 25 teenagers armed with rakes, razor blades, buckets and sponges set out Wednesday to clean up the frightful mess - but only for those businesses and homeowners wise enough to have paid their prank premiums. For 10 years, members of the YMCA Leaders Club in Lowell, about 15 miles east of Grand Rapids, have been selling the Halloween "insurance" policies. Homeowners pay $2, small businesses pay $5 and large businesses pay $10. The fund-raiser nets the group about $300 a year.

"We have to climb the trees when they throw (toilet paper) up there," volunteer adviser Phil Beachler said. "We send up the smallest kid."

Last year, the club cleared one yard of so many smashed pumpkins it took a truck to haul the mess away.

Beachler said the club has learned which areas are hit hardest and where the insurance sells best.
