Sister Diana Mae Ortiz, a 31-year-old American nun who disappeared from a retreat house in Guatemala after receiving threatening letters, was freed on Friday, church officials said.

U.S. Embassy spokesman James Dickmeyer said church officials were treating the incident as a kidnapping, and added, "We're very concerned to get to the bottom of this.""Thanks be to God, everything turned out well," said Monsignor Oriano Quilici, the papal nuncio.

He and Archbishop Prospero Penados de Barrios said Ortiz, a member of the Ursuline order, was freed Friday morning in downtown Guatemala City and taken to the house of the Maryknoll order.
