Amtrak, convicted of discharging human waste from its trains, said it will continue to operate through Florida and dump its raw sewage with only minimal steps to stop pollution of the state's waterways.

A Putnam County Circuit Court jury deliberated for just over an hour Thursday before finding the national passenger rail system guilty of four felony counts of commercial littering over the St. Johns River and a tributary, Rice Creek. It was the first criminal prosecution of a railroad for illegal dumping, a common practice because of the expense of equipping trains with toilet storage tanks.

Each count carries a maximum penalty of $5,000 and five years in prison. Prosecutors said they were not seeking a jail term but an agreement from Amtrak that it stop dumping in Florida.
