Five University of Utah science and engineering majors have been awarded one-year scholarships from the Utah Air Force Association.
Scholarship winners are:Hamid R. Arabshahi, an international student from Iran majoring in chemistry. He is also a laboratory assistant in the Chemistry Department.
Russ Graves, a West Jordan senior electrical engineering student.
Stephen J. Brook, an electrical engineering major, originally from Granada Hills, Calif. Brook belongs to two engineering honor societies at the U.
Tonya Brown, a Centerville senior majoring in physics. She works as an engineering technician for the Utah Division of Parks and Recreation in addition to attending the U. She plans to enter the U's master's program in civil engineering next year.
Steven J. McLean, a Salt Lake senior majoring in chemistry. He has been named to two academic honor societies and is listed in "Outstanding College Students of America."
The group is the state affiliate of the U.S. Air Force Association, which has about 200,000 members. It is an organization of present and retired Air Force staff and civilians who are concerned about maintaining the nation's aerospace defense.
The scholarship money, totaling $8,000, points to the association's commitment to public education and aerospace careers, according to Glenn M. Lusk, state association president.
