Facing a court petition that it be held in contempt, the state Board of Corrections is calling for construction of a multimillion-dollar women's prison in Boise, upping the ante on a request that already contemplates a 46 percent hike in state revenue.

"We have been developing plans for some time but we had such a dramatic increase in women prisoners recently that assumptions about growth we were using only a few months ago are now questionable," Corrections Director Richard Vernon said as the board approved the plan on Friday. The number of women inmates in the prison system jumped from under 90 to over 110 late last month.
