East Layton customers of US WEST Communications will see lower telephone bills in January, but they will not be receiving the extended toll-free calling they have been seeking for the past year.

Residents of an east Layton area excluded from a Salt Lake-to-Ogden toll-free calling zone that was approved for most Layton residents in 1980, have been seeking inclusion in the Layton-Kaysville telephone exchange since being assigned new telephone prefixes earlier this year. The new tariff order leaves the area in the Clearfield exchange but reduces the monthly base rate by $1.60. Residents have expressed a willingness to pay up to $3.50 additional each month if included in the Layton extended area service zone.

Group leaders say the area was excluded because of objections by a major business in the area and system upgrading in the area would make it relatively simple to change the area's service exchange.
